The Door Projects

The first video production the students worked on is the Door Project. The objective is to film someone going through a door. It's up to the students to determine the motivation for going through the door and what's behind the door. Through the process each group was to include various shots and camera movements covered in class.

All students need to comment on each of the Door Projects using studio vocabulary, specifically discussing the use of various shots and movements to convey the story. Remember to use first name and last initials only (no last names) when you post your comments. Keep all comments constructive and school appropriate.

Viewer Basics

Loading Clips in the Viewer:

FIRST: Open clip in the Viewer one of three ways:

1.  Double Click on the clip in the Browser

2. Drag the clip from the Browser to the Viewer

3. Select the clip in the Browser and select Return

SECOND:  Adjust the Viewer window to a size that is comfortable for you

1. To save this Custom Arrangement go to Window > Arrange > Set Custom Layout 1 OR

2. Shift + 'U' (Option + 'U' to set Custom Layout 2)

Viewer (and Canvas) Icons:  

Sprockets indicate the beginning and ending of a clip's media

L in the Lower-left corner indicates beginning of a clip

Reverse L in the lower right corner indicated the end of an edited clip

Purple bar at the right of a clip indicates the end of the media in the timeline

Playing Clips in the Viewer:

THIRD:  Play the clip

1. Click the play button in the Viewer Window

2. Click the Space Bar

3. Click 'L'

Play Around: 

1.  Hit Backslash (\)  to go 5 seconds back from the Playhead to 2 seconds after - can adjust length in FInal Cut Pro > User Preferences > Editing > Preview Per and Post Roll

2. Shift + \  =  play In to Out Markers

Click on the Audio clip and see what shows in the Viewer.  How can this be helpful to an editor?

Bully PSA

For your PSA, you will create a PSA on bullying. Go to this website to read about bullying and research ways you can use the power of film to make a difference on this critical issue. This PSA will require research and creativity. Be sure to use the site for research and consider ways to get both OHS and the Oconomowoc community involved. As you plan your shots, look for ways to use the various connotations certain shots have in order to better communicate your ideas.

For this project, you will need three things completed prior to filming:

1. a storyboard

2. a script

3. a shooting schedule

All paperwork will need to be finished by Thursday, April 26th. You are allowed 3 days for filming, and off-campus shoots will be considered for approval. All PSAs are to be in the can by Friday, May 4th.

Just a few suggestions for you to ponder as you write your scripts:

1. How are you going to tell the story of BULLYING? Which elements of BULLYING are you going to cover?

2. Where and when your story will take place.

3. Who is involved in the story.

Remember, you have either 30 or 60 seconds for your PSA.

As far as the format of your script, be sure to do the following:

1. Start with the transition FADE IN:

2. Next should be a SCENE HEADING.

3. After the SCENE HEADING, you should have ACTION describing what we see. Action should reflect what people do, what the audience can actually see.

4. Use CHARACTER for a character's name. Remember to be consistent in the usage of someone's name. BOB will always be BOB in a script, otherwise BOB, BOBBY, and ROBERT would be viewed as three different characters and cause mass confusion.

5. DIALOGUE always follows character. Try to make the DIALOGUE as realistic as possible while maintaining a PG rating. DUAL COLUMN is fine, but not necessary.

6. Include one PARENTHETICAL. Remember, PARENTHETICALS are used to guide a director/actor as to how dialogue is to be delivered.

7. A TRANSITION is only necessary if you are moving from location to location. Remember, wipes are for change of location and dissolves are for passage of time.

8. Your final entry in your script should be the transition FADE OUT. Remember to use a period instead of a colon, and align it flush right.
